My Favourite Things: Monday

I'm running out of clever ways to start these Monday posts. I think I've run out ways to say "Hey, look! It's Monday!'  Instead, I'll just hop right in and skip the small talk.

Hey, look! It's Monday!

Today's category: favourite seasonal fruit or vegetable.  Or fruit and vegetable.  Don't be shy!

I fell in love with zucchini last year.  One of my raised vegetable gardens is devoted to zucchini plants that have done a fair job at feeding at least one of the neighbourhood rabbits/raccoons/squirrels. I have yet to witness the wee thief making off with my vegetables, but he's stolen at least four or five.  I've managed to save two zucchinis, however, one of which I plan to pluck off the plant tomorrow.
I found these delicious beauties at the farmer's market two weeks ago.  I love how versatile zucchini is; it freezes well, can be used for both baking and cooking and the flavour is so clean and fresh it makes my taste buds do a happy dance.

Seasonal summer fruit has some competition, however.

I love blueberries.  I love them on their own, tossed with yogurt, over cereal, baked into muffins... I use frozen wild blueberries in my winter baking, but nothing really beats biting into a muffin and discovering fresh, juicy blueberry goodness.
But then there are plums.
Don't get me wrong... I like peaches and nectarines and apples and pears.  But there is something about a fresh, ripe plum that perhaps not even the blueberry can compete with.  That perfect balance between the rich sweetness of the flesh and the sharp tartness of the skin is unbeatable at this time of the year.  Then the juice gets all over your fingers and hands and face.. it's an overall sensory experience!  Don't tell the blueberries, but I think the plums take the prize today.

So what about you?
What are your favourite seasonal fruits and vegetables?

  4. Hmmm... how to choose?
Hands down, I love fruit over vegetables, but if I had to pick a favourite fresh veggie, it would be corn on the cob.

Although today I had fresh green beans out of the garden which were superb with a dribble of butter...

Fruit: strawberries, watermelon, melon, plums, cherries, grapes, but especially fresh peaches and raspberries.

  5. CHERRIES! Followed closely by fresh peaches. As for veggies, I love-love-love summer fresh tomatoes (yes, I know they're *technically* fruit). I also love me some zucchini and corn on the cob.
